Let us delve into the details of language proficiency tests and programs, including IELTS, TOEFL, ELTS, PTE, OET, the Duolingo Language Test, and the Cambridge C1 and C2 (Advanced and Proficiency) exams. These assessments and language programs are designed for individuals seeking to demonstrate their proficiency in the English language for various purposes, including academic, professional, and immigration requirements.
Two versions of the IELTS exam are General Training and Academic. The academic test judges one’s English level regarding education and whether one is ready to study at a specific university.
The IELTS General Training exam covers a broader range of topics. It is designed to test the candidate’s English level for everyday situations, including work.
Both tests assess your ability to communicate in English in all four skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The test is taken face-to-face, with one to two trained testers.
Candidates are given a score of 1-9 for each test section (1 being the lowest). Their scores for the different test sections work out as an average for an overall score.
There is no standard pass score for IELTS. Each institution sets the score that students must achieve to gain admission.
Because a team of examiners completes the IELTS exams, one must check availability, then register, book, and pay for the test.
The PTE (Pearson English Test) has two options: Academic and SELT. PTE Academic is primarily used to gain entry to educational institutions. However, it can be used for employment and immigration purposes too. Pearson offers SELT tests, and are used explicitly for UK-only visa and immigration purposes.
PTE Academic – Two hours
SELT – Varying depending on the test
The PTE Academic has four sections. Reading, writing, listening, and speaking. All questions are completed on a computer. SELT tests vary depending on the test but usually focus on speaking and listening.
The PTE Academic test is graded from 10-90 with different bands relating to an equivalent CEFR level. For example, a score of 10-29 = A1 and 85-90 = C2.
SELT tests vary depending on the test.
The minimum score to receive a grade in the PTE Academic is 10. However, acceptance rates vary depending on the institution you are applying to.
SELT tests vary depending on the test and why you are taking it.
PTE Academic – $215
SELT – $180-215
This may vary depending on the country where you take the test.

The TOEFL comprises four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.
Each section of the TOEFL is worth a maximum of 30 points. The total score is the sum of the scores from the four sections, 120. This is then converted to a scale of 0–100.
The reading section consists of three or four passages, each followed by five questions. The passages are on academic topics; they are material that might be found in an undergraduate university textbook.
The listening section consists of six or seven passages, each followed by five questions. The passages are on academic topics; they are the kind of material that you might find in a lecture at an undergraduate university.
The TOEFL Speaking section consists of six independent tasks and four integrated tasks. In the two independent tasks, the test taker speaks on a familiar topic for one to two minutes. In the four integrated tasks, the test taker reads, listens, and then speaks in response to a question.
The writing section consists of two tasks: integrated and independent tasks. In the integrated task, the test taker reads a passage and then listens to a lecture on the same topic. The test taker then writes a summary of the lecture. In the independent task, the test taker writes an essay on a familiar topic.
There is no standard pass score for TOEFL. Each institution sets the score that students must achieve to gain admission. Generally, the harder it is to get accepted to a university, the higher the TOEFL scores they expect. Some universities ask for 100 or more, and others take scores in the 60s and 70s.

Three hours for the written tests and 20 minutes for speaking. You are recommended to be available for a full day to complete the test as the speaking test can be any time between 8 am and 8 pm.
When you take the OET, you’ll answer multiple-choice questions on listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
The four test areas (listening, reading, writing, and speaking) are graded from 0-500. Your score relates to a letter grade from E (lowest) to A (highest). There is no overall score for the OET so you could score differently for different test areas.
Most employers that recognise the OET ask for a score of at least 350 in each area of the test, however, it is recommended that you check with the relevant body on their requirements before taking the test.
The OET costs around $455. However, prices vary in different countries around the world.
The test is made up of four sections:
The listening and reading sections are multiple-choice, while the writing and speaking sections are done by typing and talking into a microphone. The speaking section is done with a real person.
You’ll answer multiple-choice listening, reading, writing, and speaking questions when you take the test. You’ll also type and talk into a microphone for the writing and speaking sections.
A certificate from Duolingo is becoming increasingly recognized by universities and employers as a way to show English proficiency but check with your school or company to see if they accept it.
Each section of the test is graded out of 160, an average score from the 4 sections is taken to give an overall score.
The minimum score to complete the Duolingo English Test is 10. Still, each institution or company will set its acceptable score, so check with them before taking the test.
